Our Ultimate Guide To Safari

There is so much to consider when planning a safari holiday. When and where to go is just the starting point when planning such an epic holiday.  Thinking about what style and standard of accommodation you’d like, what wildlife you’d like to see, what else you might like to do before or after safari, all come into the decision-making when planning your trip.

What are the Big Five?

Lion, rhinoceros, leopard, elephant and buffalo comprise the Big Five.  If it’s important to you that you see the Big Five, then you need to choose your park/reserve carefully. The best time to visit will depend on what you want to see and which country you wish to visit. We help you decide on the best safari destination for you.

What other wildlife can we see in Africa?

The Great Migration in the Serengeti is a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife spectacle during which wildebeest and zebra follow the rain to new pastures.  Hermanus is the spot to go if you want to see whales. If meerkats are your thing, Botswana or South Africa are where you can see them. Rwanda and Uganda are home to gorillas and chimpanzees. Of course, for lemurs, it has to be Madagascar. If it’s birdlife that interests you then Zambia, Uganda or Botswana would make a perfect choice. Don’t miss out on seeing African Penguins in South Africa.

What should I expect on safari?

The first game drive of the day is early in the morning, so you’ll have to set your alarm.  The second game drive is usually late afternoon. It can be very cold so take warm layers, neutral tones are best. Your safari guide has a wealth of knowledge to share with you about the sightings. You’ll want to have your camera and binoculars ready.  Be prepared for off-roading in private reserves. Pack sun cream, a reusable water bottle and insect repellent.

What else can we do on safari?

You’ll have downtime in the middle of the day between game drives to enjoy a massage or a dip in the pool.  Maybe you want to dine with giraffes, fly over the Serengeti in a hot air balloon, trek with gorillas or camels, sleep under the stars, dine in the desert, conquer a sand dune, see Victoria Falls from a helicopter, or take a sundowner boat trip.  Pair your safari with a visit to some of Africa’s natural wonders like Victoria Falls, Table Mountain, Kilimanjaro, or the Ngorongoro Crater.

Why not enjoy some beach time after safari in Zanzibar, Mauritius or the Seychelles?  Or finish your holiday with a luxury cruise around the African Coast. In South Africa, consider a scenic coastal drive along Chapman’s Peak and the Garden Route.  For wine and food lovers, South Africa’s winelands are not to be missed.

What age is best for children to go on safari?

Most lodges allow children from age 8.  Some accept younger guests and provide activities for children and childminding, but young visitors are not permitted to go on game drives.  When choosing the destination for your family safari, think about whether your children will be happy to take antimalarials.  Bring the grandparents along too for an epic multigenerational family holiday that makes memories which last a lifetime.
